One aspect of Zoo REC is engaging in wildlife rehabilitation. This is one of the primary focus areas for our
organization. It also tends to be the fastest growing and is ever changing.
Responsible wildlife rehabilitation includes
  • Acquiring proper permits by the State of NC and federal entities
  • Seeking veterinary care for the animals in the program
  • Staying current with wildlife medicine
  • Obtain continuing education
  • Ensuring proper husbandry
  • Providing enrichment that simulates activities in the wild
  • Following & establishing protocols and release criteria

What does Zoo Rec rehab?

At this time Zoo REC does not currently accept rabies vector species, birds of prey, federally protected songbirds, or fawns into our wildlife rehabilitation program. We will update once our organization is able to accept these animals. For any other species or species that you are uncertain of please contact us.
During the busy season, it is possible that we may reach max capacity. If that occurs, we will temporarily limit intake until some are successfully rehabbed and released back to the wild.
Zoo REC does not rehabilitate invasive species for release purposes. If an invasive species, can be placed with another organization for educational purposes we will do so. Part of the release criteria for any wild animal rehabilitated by Zoo REC is that it is not harmful towards the environment and does not compete with native wildlife. If there is any doubt of the role of the wild animal, we consult with NC biologists to ensure the most educated decision is made.
